Celebrating South African Women in Art at Zeitz MOCAA’s 2025 Gala
The Zeitz MOCAA Gala Collateral Programme 2025, hosted by the museum’s Executive Director Koyo Kouoh, will immerse participants in South Africa’s thriving art ecosystem from February 20-23, 2025. This four-day journey offers an intimate look at the region’s complex artistic landscape, featuring studio visits, curator-led tours, and vital conversations exploring the intersection of tradition, innovation, and the lingering effects of historical inequalities.
This year’s programme is dedicated to amplifying the pivotal yet often under-recognized contributions of women in South Africa’s art world. From celebrated artists to curators and cultural practitioners, women’s roles have been fundamental in shaping the country’s contemporary art scene. The programme’s focus on these contributions aims to spark meaningful dialogue and reimagine collaborative practices within the art world.
Participants will engage with thought-provoking discussions and experiences, ranging from studio visits to roundtable dialogues, all while enjoying communal meals prepared by women chefs. The programme’s balance of reflection and joy creates a space for exploration and connection. Cape Town’s vibrant atmosphere and historical richness serve as the perfect backdrop for these experiences, making it a fitting environment for such an impactful celebration.
One of the highlights of the event is an exclusive performance by Thandiswa Mazwai, one of South Africa’s most influential contemporary singers. Mazwai’s presence will bring an added layer of cultural richness to the evening, providing guests with a rare opportunity to witness her artistry in an intimate setting.
The Gala will culminate in an exclusive Don Julio Afterparty on February 22, transforming the iconic Atrium Bowl at Zeitz MOCAA into an energetic space of art, music, and celebration. This unique afterparty will offer a fusion of fashion, nightlife, and art, drawing on the legendary energy of Don Julio 1942.
The Zeitz MOCAA Gala is a crucial fundraiser for the museum, directly supporting its curatorial and education programs. As the 2025 Gala approaches, it promises not only to elevate South Africa’s art community but also to create a space for reflection, collaboration, and celebration of women’s immense contributions.
Through partnerships with esteemed institutions like BMW South Africa, Investec Cape Town Art Fair, and Hazendal Wines, this year’s event promises an unforgettable experience, showcasing the talent and creativity that are driving South Africa’s dynamic art world forward.
