Strauss & Co Showcases South African Design: Bridging Past and Present

In a celebration of South Africa's rich artisanal heritage, Strauss & Co proudly presents "South African Design, Past & Present." This exquisite showcase curated by experts features a diverse array of furniture, metal ware, and ceramic art, seamlessly blending historical influences with contemporary design practices.

The carefully selected pieces not only offer a glimpse into South Africa's creative expression but also serve as tangible evidence of the country's innovative and diverse artisanal excellence. Each item is imbued with a deep understanding of social, cultural, and environmental influences, reflecting the nation's rich tapestry of traditions.

Among the highlights are hand-crafted furniture pieces that evoke stories of craftsmanship and tradition. From the timeless elegance of the beefwood armoire to the intricate laser-cut designs of Gregor Jenkin's Kaapentry dining table, each piece encapsulates a unique narrative that transcends time.

Wiid Design takes center stage with its collaborative benches, showcasing the fusion of artistry and functionality. Notable collaborations include the Curiosity Bench 5 with Anthony Harris and the Premise Bench 2 with Lionel Smit, which feature stunning hand-drawn motifs and painted figures, respectively.

An intriguing addition to the collection is a set of ironwood benches, crafted from reclaimed beams dating back centuries. These benches, each three meters long, offer a glimpse into the history of the Cape and pay homage to the region's rich heritage.

The ceramic art selection is equally captivating, featuring works by renowned artists such as Hannah Massey and Thembi Nala. From Massey's whimsical forms to Nala's balanced vessels, each piece captures the essence of South African tradition while offering a contemporary twist.

A highlight of the sale is the Chinese Export famille-rose Armorial dish from the Qing Dynasty, commissioned for the Cape market. This rare artefact, adorned with the coat of arms of Cornelis van Aerssen Beyeren, provides a fascinating glimpse into the region's colonial history.

"South African Design, Past & Present" invites viewers to explore the country's cultural landscape through the lens of art and design. Running from June 7 to 26, this auction coincides with the Hermanus FynArts Festival 2024, offering visitors a chance to immerse themselves in a vibrant celebration of creativity.
