ZANELE MUHOLI FACES AND PHASES 13

The activist and photographer's activist project, currently showing at the Stevenson Johannesburg has grown into a living archive of Africa?s LGBTQIA+ community

The Stevenson Johannesburg gallery recently relocated to 46 7th Avenue in Parktown North, after spending close to a decade in Braamfontein. The renovations were done by Joburg-based interior-architectural design studio, Tonic. And the result is a beautiful, peaceful and calm sanctuary. A place to linger, soak up the gorgeous space and take in all the beautiful art.

If you’re in Joburg, don't miss Prof.  Zanele Muholi’s 13th edition of  Faces and Phases that will run until  30 August 2019 Muholi has photographed more than 500 black and white portraits of lesbians, gender-non-conforming individuals and transmen in various expressions of their sexuality and gender identity, since the inception of the project in 2006.

Faces and Phases has grown into a living archive of Africa’s LGBTQIA+ community. The new exhibition embraces a reflective stance to honour some of the milestones reached by this project while still taking into account the long journey ahead before reaching total emancipation—including the eradication of hate crimes against members of the LGBTQIA+ communities.

Muholi’s  Faces and Phases series has been shown at the Venice Biennale and the São Paulo Biennial. Her book Somnyama Ngonyama: Hail the Dark Lioness, recently won the Kraszna-Krausz best photography book award. She has also been awarded the Rees Visionary Award by Amref Health Africa, a fellowship from the Royal Photographic Society in the UK, France’s Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and the Mbokodo Award in the category of Visual Arts in 2017.

The Stevenson Johannesburg is open Monday to Friday, 9am - 5pm, and Saturday from 10am - 1pm.
