How to clean your mattress naturally
Our mattresses are arguably the most-loved and comfiest possessions in our homes - but they can also be the most bacteria-ridden.
It’s no secret that they are exposed to a lot - sweat, drool, hair and skin oil, shed skin flakes, and a multitude of bodily fluids - yet most people still don’t give it the proper cleaning treatment it deserves.
Just as you change your sheets on a regular basis, so too should you deep-clean your mattress every once in a while. And while it may be a mission, you may already have all the cleaning equipment you need at your disposal.
Here are a few tips on how to clean your mattress naturally:
A good vacuum
First, strip all the bedding from your mattress and toss it into the washing machine while you work. Then, vacuum the mattress. The top, each side, underneath the mattress, as well as between the mattress and box springs - get someone to help you lift the mattress if it proves difficult.
A little baking soda
Create your own cleaning concoction with one cup of baking soda mixed with a few drops of lavender essential oil. Place the mixture in a strainer and shake over the entire mattress. Leave to soak for 10 - 15 minutes. Then, vacuum the mixture off the bed.
Stain treatments
Spot-clean old, deep stains on your mattress by making a paste of baking soda, salt, and water. Rub the stain with the paste and let sit for approximately 30 minutes. Wipe aay the mixture with a clean, damp cloth.
For blood stains: Fill a spray bottle with 3 percent hydrogen peroxide. Spray the stain and blot with a clean towel. Repeat until the stain is removed. Let the mattress air dry or use a blow dry on the wet patch.
For urine and sweat stains: Mix together one cup of hydrogen peroxide, 3 tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Stir until the baking soda dissolves, then spray the entire stained area. Allow the solution to soak into the mark and leave to air dry for at least one hour.
For vomit stains: Mix a solution of 50% water and 50% white vinegar. Spray the stained area and blot with a clean towel. Repeat until the stain is gone. Sprinkle baking soda over the stain and allow to sit for 1 hour. Then, vacuum the baking soda away and let the mattress air dry.
