Design Week Lagos (DWL) is the leading design week on the African continent, conceived to present and celebrate the best in contemporary African design across categories while bringing international field leaders and visitors to experience the most exciting work from the region. Founded by African design advocate Titi Ogufere, DWL was first established in 2019 as a citywide celebration held in Lagos, Nigeria over ten days, promoting creativity, innovation across disciplines, including architecture, industrial design, interior design, furniture design, graphics design, and technology.
Hosted in October and featuring incredible African design, this event is one to bookmark. We had a look at some of the artists that showcased their work at Design Week Lagos.
Tomide Atelier
Based in Lagos, Nigeria - Tomide Atelier has over 7 years of experience working in the interior design and decor industry. Founded by Adesemoye Akintomide Sylvester, who has a background in design, art and sculpture. The bright yellow sculptural pieces are simply a sight to behold and this is a designer to note for the future.
Myles Igwe
Artist and designer Myles Igwe share the Anwuli chair at DWL this year. Described as a multi-purpose, artfully-expressive prop that explores the dichotomy between simplicity and sophistication.
According to the artist’s official Instagram, ‘Simplicity is the easiest way to attain practicality and utility, hence the easily perceivable design but sophisticated regardless. The chair manifests the impact of simple but intentional design.’
Olubunmi Adeyemi (AFROMINIMA)
Founder of AFROMINIMA and The DÅ brand, Olubunmi Adeyemi is an artist, designer and entrepreneur. According to the official site, AFROMINIMA is a design and lifestyle movement inspired by the Japanese Minimalism aesthetic, Scandinavian Functional style combined with African Heritage. This afrocentric minimalist design language echoes through the pieces they showcased over the event. Highly functional, beautifully crafted and made to last in your space.
