There’s no time like the present to try something new. If you’ve been thinking about adding a new hobby onto the roster, why not try punch needling?

Also known as rug tufting, this pandemic DIY hobby has taken social media by storm since around 2020. The bright, bold colours of this textile hobby are a staple of the trend and really could be considered as dopamine dressing for the home. After all, one way colour can be used is to uplift your mood and brighten up the space. And the best part, you can try punch needling pretty much anything, from coasters to clothes.

But, if you’re keen on trying this maximalist trend, here’s what you need to know. You’ll need the materials, time and effort to put this project together. First of, have a look at the wool shops near you to find the material you need and colours you like. Secondly, you’ll also need to find a good tufting gun to get started with your project. Finally, a good rug requires a sturdy frame for you to work with and on for future projects.

The most important thing with any hobby is giving it a try, and exploring your creativity. Rugs make for really great gifts and are perfect for the colour lover in your life. And if rugs aren’t what you’d like to focus on, you can expand your horizons to other creative projects.
