Step into the sunlight (after slathering on the sunscreen, of course) and enjoy getting your hands dirty. Not only is gardening good for your mental health, but various academic studies have also been conducted that prove the physical benefits it has for people with existing medical conditions.
Additionally, a recent research study by scientists at the University of Florida has found that gardening can even lower stress and anxiety levels in healthy women. If you’re still not convinced about the multitude of benefits gardening has, we’ve listed six ways this activity can improve your health and well-being.
1. Daily dose of Vitamin D
@goodpathgarden Dreams do come true… over 4 years of course. 🙃 Take a look at our narrow entryway, the most cherished spot in our garden. Info: - This narrow garden is roughly 11.6 ft wide. - This area receives morning shade and afternoon sun. - The name of the trees planted along the fence line is called Emerald Green Arborvitae and they were planted about 2.5 feet apart. List of hydrangea names: - Invincibelle Limetta Hydrangea - Lime Rickey Hydrangea - Invincibelle Mini Mauvette® Hydrangea #goodpathgarden #fyp #gardeningtips #smallgardenideas #smallgardenideasrdentok #patiomakeover #gardentransformation #gardenmakeover ♬ original sound - kardashianshulu
While tending to your garden, you will be soaking up Vitamin D, which has various health benefits and could protect you against certain cancers and heart conditions. Don’t be afraid to start small. Do what is manageable for you. As you make small incremental gains in caring for your greens, you could always expand. Be consistent and do not overwhelm yourself.
2. Get your body moving
@curlycultivators Remember to take good care of yourself while gardening to get ahead of stiffness, soreness and injury!💪![CDATA[]]>🏾 Check and adjust your posture 💪![CDATA[]]>🏾 Listen to your body and take regular breaks 💪![CDATA[]]>🏾 Use the right tools for the job 💪![CDATA[]]>🏾 Stay hydrated!#raisedbeds #vegetablegarden #growyourownfood #gardening #fyp #gyo #garden #gardentok #zone9garden #zone9b #ediblegarden #vegpatch #growingfood #urbangarden #gardener #backyardgardening #aging#inmygarden #exercise #stretch #workout #selfcare ♬ Floor Cracking (Building Wall Ceiling Ground Concrete House Crack Noise Clip) [Sound Effect] - Finnolia Sound Effects

If you are someone who spends a great deal of time behind a desk for professional or academic reasons and remain relatively sedentary during your free time, you run the risk of getting various health conditions. Gardening can be a wonderful form of light exercise. Don’t be afraid of working up a sweat as you mow your lawn, pull out the weeds, or care for your soil – it’s good for you.
3. Expose yourself to good dirt
@ds.gardening Two weeks back, after amending the soil, I planted Spring vegetables in this garden bed. These are the crops that I am growing in this bed 🌱 Golden acre cabbage 🌱 Japanese giant red mustard 🌱 Cabbage Hiroshima 🌱 Southern giant curl mustard 🌱 Mizuna beni houshi mustard I started these from seeds indoors and hardened them for a week before transplanting. In this reel, I am organizing the starter plants in the bed in sections based on the crop type. I have planted two Mizuna beni houshi mustard crops per square foot. Since others grow larger, they are planted one per square foot. The irrigation system that I am using in this bed is the Garden Grid Watering System by Garden In Minutes @garden_in_minutes . Since it divides the area into square foot blocks, it makes it convenient to plan the garden spacing as well as helps water evenly. Use my code DSGARDEN to avail $10 off of your purchase of $100+. I am using Root Zone Starter Fertilizer by @drearthorganics in each of the planting holes. This helps the seedlings have a great start in the ground. My raised bed is from @vegega_garden and the hand tools are from @winslowandross . Links for all of these products in my bio. Happy first day of Spring everyone! . . . . . . . . . . . . #gardeninminutes #gardengrid #raisedbedgardening @gardeninminutes #gardening @garden_in_minutes #raisedgardenbeds #raisedbedirrigation #raisedbedgarden #reelsusa #backyardgarener #backyardgardening #irrigation #gardenirrigation #backyardgarden ♬ original sound - ds.gardening
By getting your hands dirty as you tend to the soil in your garden, you will be effectively exposing yourself to the natural micro-organisms therein, which will help you build up your body’s natural immunity.
4. Absorb the wonderful oxygen
@agrotonomy Leafy greens grown on aeroponic Tower Garden systems. These plants spend 80 percent of their lives with their roots suspended in the air, allowing for 100% oxygen availability at the root level. These plants use 95% less water than their counterparts grown in soil.#TowerGarden #TowerFarm #GrowYourOwn #Aeroponics #VerticalFarming #VerticalAgriculture #Aeroponic #PrecisionFarming #WaterSavings #SpaceSavings #HealthyLiving #VegetableGarden #KnowYourFarmer #PesticideFree #BeyondOrganic ♬ You and Me - Chris Alan Lee
Plants are a wonderful source of oxygen, and caring for them and watching them grow through your care and nurturing will give you great pleasure. If you’ve been sitting at your desk and toiling over work for some time, take a break, step outside, and smell the roses. There is nothing quite like inhaling the fresh scents from your own beautiful garden.
5. Fresh fruit and vegetables

There is something so wonderful about picking fresh fruit and vegetables from your very own garden. Produce you’ve toiled over yourself won’t have the same chemicals as greens purchased in your local grocer. Eating more fresh vegetables and fruits you’ve grown will also be great for your physical health.
6. Relief from stress

As aforementioned, gardening is also a great source of stress relief. Busying yourself in your garden is fantastic for your mental health and allows you to focus on something other than a television, laptop, or phone screen. Being in nature and absorbing its beauty has many benefits for your emotional well-being.
