In the heart of downtown Vancouver, just a heartbeat away from the lively False Creek and bustling Granville Island, a penthouse epitomises the essence of urban sophistication. Designed by Erica James, the founder of Erica James Design (Instagram @ericajames.design), this contemporary bachelor pad blends sleek design with luxurious finishes, creating a sanctuary that radiates both modern elegance and comfort.

This penthouse has stunning 180-degree views of False Creek and the city skyline, framed by high ceilings and expansive windows. The apartment’s high-rise setting was a unique challenge, working around existing structural columns and refinishing windows rather than replacing them.

Captured beautifully by Tina Kulic from Ema Peter Photography, the design embraces a modern monochromatic colour scheme. The choice of cool-toned white oak, super white quartzite, and dark chocolate oak infuses the space with timeless elegance. “We opted for a modern monochromatic colour scheme throughout the penthouse to evoke a timeless ambiance,” explains Erica. This palette not only enhances the sleek lines of the design but also allows the breathtaking views to take centre stage.

Erica’s selection of materials reflects both durability and aesthetic appeal. The client’s request for flawless white oak from Italy was met with a beautiful option from Listone Giordano. Super White quartzite minimises reflections and fingerprints, dark chocolate oak was used to add warmth, while leather accents, including a striking Apparatus light fixture and edgy leather strap chairs, enhance the masculine feel of the space.

The project allowed Erica to explore beyond her usual transitional designs, resulting in a space that pushes creative boundaries. Structural columns in the kitchen were wrapped in elegant stone and oak millwork, and existing pipes behind the sofa were covered with a custom marble console.

Erica drew inspiration from a trip to Milan, where modern showrooms showcased dark oak, clean lines, and large glass dividers. This influence is evident in the penthouse’s design, including the custom angular sofa and furniture layout, which integrates seamlessly with a custom Art & Looms rug featuring organic curves.

With 2,360 square feet of living space, the penthouse includes three bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, and an upstairs rooftop deck with breathtaking city views.

This contemporary bachelor pad is a testament to the art of modern design, where every detail is crafted to harmonise with the sleek, sophisticated ambiance of the space. Erica James has created a penthouse that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of urban living, offering a retreat that is as stylish as it is serene.
