Trying out plant-based foods doesn’t have to be super complicated, and with any lifestyle change or adaptation its best to ease into it. One of the ways to make the transition easier is to do your research into some easy swaps that you already like so it doesn’t feel like you’re missing out on ingredients you use regularly.
Thankfully, finding new recipe inspiration is much easier than before, with social media being one way to discover new content creators or recipes.
We’ve rounded up some fun vegan swaps or additions to your meals or recipes while you’re doing Veganuary.
Tempeh
A traditional Indonesian food, made from fermented soy beans and is a great source of protein. If you’ve never cooked with it before, it can be likened to tofu and can be used in similar ways. Tempeh but is considered a healthier option over tofu and is great baked, fried or as a protein replacement.
Avocados
A no brainer and often a staple in many recipes, avocado is a great useful replacement for other dairy based products when you’re trying vegan recipes. You can use it as a spread for your bagels or toast. It also really adds a creamy texture to dressings, smoothies and more.
Seeds/nuts
A concern for people who try to go plant-based is finding adequate things to snack on. Seeds and nuts are one way to get your additional fibre, vitamins and stay fuller for longer. Try walnuts, cashews or add some chia seeds to your plant-based yoghurt for an easy snack when you’re feeling peckish
Plant based milks
Finally, one of the key things people often bring up with trying Veganuary is how tough it can be to find a dairy alternative that they enjoy. The best tip? Go ahead and try them all, from almond to oat or macadamia. You can also try making your own once you’ve settled on an option that works for you.
