The shift to remote learning poses new challenges for parents everywhere. In addition to keeping a squirmy seven-year-old’s attention or learning math again, creating a school in one’s home is now part of the to-do list. Transforming a living space into an effective learning space is a feat in redesigning and repurposing. But based on what they’ve shared on Instagram, famous parents like Busy Philipps, Neil Patrick Harris, and more have managed to set their kids up for success. So if you haven’t quite nailed the home school aesthetic, read on for some inspiration.

Melissa Joan Hart

Sometimes the best way to create a hybrid space is to add one key piece of furniture. The Melissa & Joey star set up her son at an antique-style school desk, and he appears to be in the zone as he works on his numerical penmanship.

Ready for second grade, I guess!

The podcast host went the dining room table route for her daughter's remote learning base. While the space uses dark tones, the playful prints on her wallpaper and the chevron rug lend a sense of whimsy and fun that is at least somewhat appropriate for a second-grade classroom.

The Black Monday star has managed to find the animal chairs of our childhood dreams. A perfect balance between kitsch and style, this simple addition makes her house feel like a classroom. Also of note is the tray full of mini water bottles she has ready for her kindergartener son. Hydration is key to a successful year!

Jenna Fischer

Even celebrities fall victim to cluttered spaces. However, when you look past the clutter it is hard not to note how the warm woods, natural light, and perfectly worn-in table makes the Office star’s dining room perfect to transition from classroom to family dinners. She also keeps it real in her post, explaining that she shared the picture as a response to all of the picture-perfect at-home classrooms she’s seen online. The never-ending shuffling of clutter continues.

Alyson Hannigan

Alyson Hannigan uses a dry-erase board for both form and function. Using a board as a divider is an inventive way to limit distraction, especially between remote learners in different grades. It is clear the mother of two pays close attention to detail, from the ruled paper backdrop to the globe collection.

Online learning here we come!! 📚✏️ #backtoschool

A wood dining table in Witherspoon’s home has become her son’s remote learning space. The room is filled with natural light and has nods to traditional classrooms—flash cards of encouragement rest on the back wall beside a trifold of the solar system. The use of tablets for instruction limits the need for many school supplies, aside from a few writing utensils that rest in matching pen holders.

Pink

This house was destined for homeschooling. Pink’s jewel-toned walls are youthful and imbue the space with joy, and the singer has found creative ways throughout the COVID-19 pandemic to merge the demands of her children’s schooling with the layout of her home. In April, she created a house-wide obstacle course that seemed just as good as any gym class.

Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka

We know that the How I Met Your Mother stars and their young twins have multiple stylish residences they call home, but in a moment of extreme remote learning earlier this year, they seemed to have turned a minivan into their daughter’s classroom. Let’s hope things do not get so dire this semester.

Simple modern design allows for a distraction-free learning environment, unless Greenfield is your dad. Since remote learning began in March, the New Girl star and his daughter have claimed their titles as the class clowns of Instagram, posting humorous videos. Now his son has started preschool and seems to be following in the family’s footsteps.
