The Atlantic Seaboard is home to some of the most popular eateries in Cape Town, and visitors or residents are spoilt for choice when it comes to a brunch, lunch or dinner spot. There is always something new to try, with local restaurants that have delicious fare, Insta-worthy backdrops and decor inspiration abound. The recently launched Sonny and Irene is no different, and this Kloof Road cafe in Sea Point has touches of pale pink and swirls of lush green throughout the eatery.
Launched in September, this eatery has garnered a lot of attention from residents and local foodies, and the cafe states it’s not-your-average neighbourhood bakery. Sonny and Irene forms part of the ever expanding Kove Collection portfolio, which includes Chinchilla, Lily’s and Surfshack to mention a few.
So what’s on the menu? Sonny and Irene open from 8am, Monday to Sunday and offer breakfast, lunch and dinner for eager patrons. If you love a breakfast dish first thing in the morning, choose from the classic house breakfast offering or the poached eggs with blistered asparagus. Need a boost? Get that necessary caffeine fix with an iced honeycomb latte.
If you’re more about having a lunch meeting and relaxing into the dusky evening hours, lunch and dinner menu items include hearty meals and light bites. To get the afternoon started, we dove into the charred asparagus and butter poached prawns, a delightful bite to round off the late lunch hour.
For the table, we picked the crispy artichokes and char-grilled spiced cauliflower starters. It’s a great way to satisfy that mid-afternoon hunger that arrives at around 3pm. For early-ish dinner, the poached prawn ciabatta, slathered with spiced Marie Rose sauce and the sumptuous pot of mussels with white wine and cream.
Finally, sometimes all you need is a good drink or two to round off a busy week. We sipped and swirled on the house margarita and cosmopolitan, a great way to cheers to the evening.
The restaurant has opened their beautiful Art-Deco styled bar since getting their liquor license. If you’re in the mood for other cocktails, why not for a refreshingly fruity peach bellini or the recently launched cucumber and basil martini.
Otherwise, have a look at the wine menu and ask for a recommendation.
Sonny and Irene is open, Monday to Sunday from 8am and bookings can be made via the official site or by giving them a call.
