On September 24, 2024, to coincide with Heritage Day celebrations across the country, the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town celebrated a remarkable milestone; the centenary of the gallery's iconic Grain Silo and their ongoing commitment to supporting and showcasing contemporary African art.

Originally constructed in 1924, the Grain Silo was a vital component of Cape Town’s industrial landscape, symbolising the city’s significance in global trade. Yet, as the grain industry waned, the Silo fell silent, standing as a relic of a bygone era. The structure underwent a stunning transformation in 2017, when it was reimagined by renowned architect Thomas Heatherwick and reopened as Zeitz MOCAA - the largest museum dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora.

A Day of Culture and Connection

The Centenary Celebration offered a dynamic, immersive experience for attendees, encouraging a reconnection with this cultural landmark in the Silo District at the V&A Waterfront. The event featured a carefully curated public program that included a diverse range of activities throughout the museum, showcasing local talent and fostering a lively, social atmosphere.

Visitors enjoyed cultural performances, guided tours, art workshops, and even face painting, making it a perfect day for families and art enthusiasts alike. The outdoor food court, presented by Makers Landing, added to the festive spirit, offering culinary delights that complemented the day’s celebrations.

The event culminated in a stunning performance by South African trumpeter and vocalist Mandisi Dyantyis, captivating the audience during the Silo Concert. This musical finale encapsulated the theme of creativity and connection, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended.

Honouring Heritage

The Centenary Celebration was not just a commemoration of the past but also a tribute to the future of art and culture in South Africa. It marked a day where the rich heritage of the Grain Silo met contemporary artistic expression, igniting imaginations and enriching the souls of all participants.

As Zeitz MOCAA continues to stand as a beacon of contemporary African art, the Centenary Celebration serves as a reminder of the power of cultural spaces to unite and inspire. It was a day to honour history while looking forward, celebrating the ongoing dialogue between the past and the future in this remarkable venue. Here’s to many more years of creativity and connection at Zeitz MOCAA.
