Cape Town was recently named Africa’s art capital trumping Joburg, Lagos and Marrakesh, according to The South African Art Market: Pricing & Patterns study. Just take a look at the flood of art from all over Africa and the world washing over the Cape this month; the Stellenbosch Triennale, Kenyan painter Michael Armitage figurative compositions at the Norval Foundation, prolific West African artists, Mali’s textile virtuoso Abdoulaye Konate, and Nigerian-born multi-media artist, Otobong Nkanga at the Zeitz MOCAA. Not forgetting the upcoming and highly-anticipated Design Indaba. And of course, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair(ICTAF) which started today and will run until Sunday, 16 February 2020.
The Investec Cape Town Art Fair is one of the largest art events on the international art fair calendar. It has managed to establish itself as a credible and prolific world stage for artists, galleries, collectors and art lovers—bringing together artist and galleries from Africa, Middle East, UK, Europe and USA since launching eight years ago. It fosters innovative collaboration between local organisations, museums, art and cultural foundations making the Mother City the place to be in February each year.
This year, ICTAF is showcasing 400 local and international artists and 93 galleries. Visitors can also look forward to art film and documentary screenings, informative talks with artists, curators, private collectors and academics and so much more.
Here are some of our favourite artists and exhibitions from the #ICTAF 2020:
SOLO
is a curated project of the ICTAF. You can’t escape Sungi Mlengeya’s black bodies floating about and Teresa Kutala Firmino’s unusual fusions of Christ in Africa is quite stirring.
