Nestled in the heart of Almaty, Kazakhstan, lies a charming small apartment that exemplifies the transformative power of interior design. Created by the talented young designer Fariz Mamedov, founder of FM Interior, this 388-square-foot home is a stunning testament to the art of maximising space without compromising on style or comfort.

From the outset, Mamedov approached the project as an evolving process. “When I start to work on a project, I am not 100% sure how it will look at the end, but at the same time I know for sure that it will be cool, unique and will suit the person for whom we are designing the interior,” he confesses. The result is a bold, bright, lively, and multi-layered space that effortlessly merges modern Nordic influences with playful accents.

One of the defining features of this apartment is Mamedov's masterful blending of contrasting elements. By marrying warm and cool tones, soft and hard textures, and glossy and rough surfaces, he creates striking visual contrasts that not only captivate the eye but also enhance the feeling of spaciousness. The walls, adorned in a warm Scandinavian shade of Jotun paint, serve as a blank canvas, inviting the incorporation of textiles and furniture that breathe life into the home.

For instance, the kitchen showcases natural veneer cabinetry juxtaposed with stone countertops and ceramic mosaics. Mirrored furniture fronts and metal blinds add a layer of tactile interest, creating a harmonious balance that permeates every nook of the apartment. “Balance and harmony are important in every nook,” he says, highlighting the thoughtful approach that guides his design philosophy.

Tailored to the Homeowner's Lifestyle

Understanding the homeowner’s vibrant lifestyle was crucial to the design process. As a dedicated fan of pop music and iconic design, the client was open to bold decisions, allowing Mamedov the freedom to experiment. Fariz wanted to make the space lighter and more modern. This versatility inspired a design full of accents and unexpected solutions that reflect the homeowner's personality while providing a canvas for future memorabilia from his global travels.

Mamedov faced the challenge of maximising the compact size of the apartment while addressing the client’s wishlist, which included creating a separate bedroom area and ample storage. “When I saw the size of the apartment and the client’s wish list, I realised that it was an interesting challenge and an opportunity to express myself to the fullest,” says Fariz. Through thoughtful planning, he presented six different layout options, ultimately arriving at a configuration that perfectly balanced functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Intelligent Use of Space

The apartment’s design reflects a keen understanding of spatial dynamics. With ceilings just 6.5 feet high and windows facing east, maximising natural light was paramount. Mamedov ensured that the space remained airy and bright, employing smart design solutions that enhanced the home’s flow. “We discussed the homeowner’s lifestyle, hobbies and preferences, so that the apartment would complement and reflect him,” he notes.

Textiles play a pivotal role in this design narrative. Each carefully selected element - from the vibrant rugs by Jaime Hayon to the playful pops of colour in the hallway and bathroom - contributes to the overall aesthetic while providing comfort. A concrete floor in a warm white tone creates continuity throughout the apartment, ensuring that every room feels connected yet distinct.

The curated selection of furnishings showcases an impressive array of iconic designs. From Arne Jacobsen’s Ant chair to Verner Panton's Hive pendant lamp, the apartment is adorned with pieces that not only reflect the homeowner's love for design but also serve as conversation starters. “This neutral Scandinavian tone allowed us to apply my favourite technique: emphasising on textiles and furniture,” says Fariz. His choices highlight the seamless integration of functionality and artistry, with every item carefully considered for its contribution to the overall harmony of the space.

This small apartment stands as a testament to the innovative spirit of modern design. Fariz Mamedov’s ability to blend bold colour with thoughtful decor while maximising the potential of a compact space is nothing short of inspiring. The result is a home that feels expansive and vibrant, perfectly encapsulating the essence of a life lived fully and stylishly.
