Right at our doorstep, just a 4-hour flight away, the island of Mauritius captures the heart of any wanderer. From the soothing sounds of gentle waves lapping on the shoreline to the subtle sea breeze that permeates the air, an instant wave of tranquillity washes over your mind and soul in this beautiful country.

While their summer is notorious for cyclones, the challenging winds and rain provided an opportunity for the abundant Mauritian hospitality to shine through.

The downtime became the perfect occasion to explore the hotel facilities and indulge in some much-needed rest.

Starting at the Salt of Palmer hotel located on the east coast of the island, we were welcomed with an assortment of the freshest summer fruits and an endless flow of rum cocktails (the preferred drink for locals, it seems).

The air was filled with the enticing aroma of seafood delicacies and roasting spices as dinner was being prepared in the kitchen. The flavour profiles hinted at a fusion of French, Indian, and Asian cuisines, each with its own distinctive island flair.

Witnessing the chef craft their signature Mauritian chicken curry and flatbread was a feast for the senses, allowing us to sample nearly every dish on the menu.

Local vegetables and fruits regularly grace the menus, featuring exotic options such as dragon fruit, bell fruit (commonly known as Jamalac), and the sweetest dwarf bananas ever tasted. The culinary experience showcased the rich diversity of flavours, reflecting the island's cultural influences in every delightful bite.

While the food nourished our souls, the hotel's design delighted our eyes. Influenced by Moroccan aesthetics with modern accent shades, artist Camille Walala brings vibrant pops of colour throughout the entire hotel.

Captivating moments, from the lobby to the central water feature, are scattered throughout the space, showcasing the contemporary ambiance of this boutique hotel.

Upon transitioning to the Lux Belle Mare, their partner hotel located on the East Coast, the contemporary design seamlessly extends throughout the space.

This recently renovated hotel has been transformed to harmonise with its tropical surroundings, adopting a minimalist approach. The subtle tones of leafy greens, creams, and pale pink ensure that the hotel's design complements rather than overpowers the island's natural beauty.

The Lux Belle Mare's recent award for this renovation underscores its well-deserved five-star rating.

The spa facilities offer a refreshing range of amenities, including cold water plunges, saunas, and, of course, deep tissue massages—an ideal way to unwind after a day of travel and exploration in the city.

By being intentional with your time while exploring this beautiful island, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—an adventurous space for thrill-seekers and a tranquil holiday for those seeking rest and relaxation. Whatever your preference, Mauritius should always find a place on your holiday getaway list.
